Ssanyu - Let Go and Let Love

Ssanyu works in the practice of Bone Healing, Reiki Shamanism, Narrative Medicine and Mindfulness Meditation to share the tools to break away from fear and anxiety. Creator of the Pause3TM method, a new ethnology that combines spirituality and narrative medicine, Ssanyu focuses in areas of stress, burnout, palliative care and spirituality to teach the art of letting go.

What is the ancestral medicine of bone healing?

I am 7th generation Bone Healer, from the Bakyondwa clan of Uganda, a Shaman, where we “bridge” between the spiritual and physical planes as a conduit, to healing and yes, to specifically heal bones . Our clan are the medicine men and women to the Kabaka, the King of Uganda. This is a Divine gift given to our people. I have helped those in physical and emotional pain, to help assist in their healing. I apply ancient spiritual wisdom, coupled with the work of clinical and scholarly work of Narrative Medicine.

These gifts are meant to be shared, and I continue to work towards supporting and preserving indigenous wisdoms and traditions, and aligning my Earth mission of bridging the worlds of consciousness and ancient wisdoms. I am full of gratitude that I have the privilege to share my love and joy for living in the moment, and understanding that our narratives are our medicine.

How do you work together with hospitals, which have a focus on western medicine, to provide a complete offering?

I believe in integrative health approaches to build healthier communities, and have had the privilege to bring the healing modality of Reiki to palliative care and hospice patients. I practice Reiki Shamanism, which works in harmony with the spiritual allies of the natural world to gain understanding and insight. Education is key, leading with humility creates connections, and in most instances, the hospitals I’ve worked in have had integrative wellness programs, that support the work whether it be reiki, aromatherapy, yoga, acupuncture... they have acknowledged that there are effective ancient healing medicines that are beneficial to a person’s well-being.

This is just one way I work with hospitals. When I graduated from the M.S. in Narrative Medicine at Columbia University, I was offered a fellowship to continue my research on Stress and Burnout amongst pediatric medical residents. I’ve worked with care professionals around the world, and the medical community at large. This particular group of medical residents I worked with in using the methods of narrative medicine in workshops to address their stress and burnout.

From roots in the humanities and patient-centered care, narrative medicine is used to drive engagement with key stakeholders in clinical and non-clinical environments. It is a multidisciplinary approach to better recognize the impact story has on creating greater understanding of others through empathy.

Allowing one to experience the process of listening and witnessing, achieves more empathic and authentic communication between individuals, and decrease depersonalization for professionals in high-stressed environments and pressure situations.

Can you explain a little about Narrative Medicine and who this could help?

Narrative Medicine is a multi-discipline approach to better recognizing the impact of illness that it has on a patient and provider of health. It gives power to one's personal story of health, illness, and death, where the relationship between storytelling and health become embedded in caring practices. I call this embodying your Narrative Health. Narrative Medicine practice is to the benefit of the person and his/her community.

Narrative Medicine is not a therapy, but the methods can be used to help individuals and communities address their individual and community health, bias’, trauma, authenticity, and to better communicate with the self and other as it is a method that leads to increasingly powerful means to improve how we connect with one another as humans.

I have taken this training with the understanding that we will at some point in our lives endure the chaos of trauma / illness. Learning how to cohere and radically listen to one who is hurting is a profound act of humility and humanity. Through the practice of Bone healing, Reiki Shamanism, and Mindfulness Meditation I share the tools to break free from our trauma; fear and anxiety, with a strong belief that we are all self-healers.

With a passion to connect, empower and support others in healing through personal stories by expanding consciousness in their everyday lives, I have created the Pause3TM Mindset and Inspire Method, a new ethnology that joins spirituality and narrative medicine. The Pause3TM method bridges science, clinical and scholarly research in narrative medicine in an accessible way, so as to learn the art of letting go. In sharing these tools of self-healing, I believe this is the ultimate practice of self-love.

What does self-healing mean to you?

We all possess this natural ability to heal ourselves - and all one has to do is trust the life force and let it guide you.

If you could share some words of wisdom to the world, what would they be?

Let go and let love into your heart. You are supported and so loved.

That it is okay to ask for help, AND prosperity and abundance is your birthright! Take time to give gratitude every morning and end your day with gratitude.

What other wellness routines do you incorporate into your day?

I pray and practice affirmations all day long. My favourite to share is “ I am so loved, supported and open to receiving with ease, I am”.

What is your favourite ritual?

Prayer in the morning and self healing practices like self-reiki.
